Fiesta Mi Solo,
My Great White Experience
Greetings readers,
This weekend was the highlight of Fiesta week in San Antonio, TX, a week long
party experience which celebrates something to do with Mexico. It could be
Mexican independence day, but don't quote me on that one.
On Thursday night UFO, the legendary 70's and 80's band from the UK played at
Hemisfair Plaza, a huge outdoor area that is located smack in the middle of
downtown SA by the River walk Its a great place for shows and they are usually
free! For those youngsters out there, In 1968, San Antonio hosted the Worlds
Fair called Hemisfair and it was a BIG thing back in
that day.
I had given a lot of thought of catching that show as
I LOVE UFO! My bff, Colleen and I were going to head
down there and check out the scene. Tonight a LOT
was happening downtown, Fiesta, parties and lots of
music.
If you read my last blog, Colleen's mom had to under
go surgery so naturally she was with her mom. I
waited to hear from her and when I did it was already
9:00 pm. I didn't want to dare driving in that mess and
by the time I got there it would be another hour to find a place to park. It was
getting late and she still had to get ready (another 2 hrs), so I decided to not go. I
was OK with it because it was her mother. I heard the show was awesome as
several friends had to call and RUB IT IN! OUCH!! I believe it was the original
lineup sans Pete Way who was having some Visa problems. I read where Andy
Parker is living in Dallas now (see its GOOD for
BRITS to Move to TEXAS!) I love the singer Phil
Mogg.
I had been thinking of that show for some
time now and when I do I think of a high school
pal named Julie who swore she hooked up with him
one time way back in the 80's. She was cute back
then and I haven't seen her since. Believe it or not..
The other day my friend Allison called me and
she got an E mail from JULIE on classmates.com
and she was asking about me!!! WOW!! Spooky!
I knew Great White, the popular 80's band from CA
was playing on Fri night and I had never seen them live before. We decided to
make up for it then. On Fri night I started early and called C and she said she
couldn't make it because her mom might be getting discharged home. Shit. (I'm
glad she is better tho). I called a few more friends and everyone already had
plans or didn't want to go see Great White downtown in all the chaos. Screw it! I
thought. I'm going anyway. Hey, I have gone to music conventions alone before
and I always meet new people so why not?
I spent extra time getting my hair just right. Make up perfect? Check. Outfit
good? Check. I was ready to go. I went to a mall close by who offers bus service
where you park and ride down there. For 6 bucks it is the best deal in town for
big events like this as they drop you off and pick you up in front with no stops.
The lines were long for the bus but they loaded quickly. Everyone on the bus was
ready to party and get wild. When we arrived I thought about going to Fiesta
before I went to Hemisfair Plaza but knew the show would get crowded. I walked
in and the crowd was scant at 8:30. I was able to go to the front but there was a
VIP section and a regular free section. VIP offered you front stage center,
special port o toilets, and a special beer area that the commoners cant use. Oh
the elite life.! I walked to the VIP area and ran into my old friend Chrissy Bliss.
Chrissy is the lead singer in a band called Bliss and she was one of my models in
my fashion show She looked amazing and was telling me how she has been on a
work out regimen and that she might be doing a burlesque show. She is a natural
for that as she is cute and sexy. I got my VIP band and proceeded to the front.
The opening band was A great Austin band named Mothers Anthem show I have
never seen this band live and glad I did. Dressed in velvety
military style jackets, their look reminded me of Prince
meets Napoleon glam rocker, not to mention they are all
very good looking guys to boot. Watching them reminded
me of how much I want to relocate to Austin! Their sound
reminds me a lot of a pop Toadies/Burden Brothers.
Melodic with strong vocals by lead singer Kirk Baxley who
I might add is quite a good front man jumping
around entertaining his faithful listeners while grabbing
and shaking the many outstretched hands who reached
for a touch. Some of the songs were a little too slow for
me as I wanted more of the heavier sound, tho they did
make up for that. One person who really caught my eye
the drummer, Jonathon Scott who has all the moves
and looks good doing it! I did get the chance to say hello
when I was leaving and he said he saw me when he was
playing. Woo Hoo. See it pays to be a VIP!
By the time Mothers Anthem has finished, Great White took the stage shortly
after. It was already getting close to 10 and I had to catch that stupid ride back
on the bus to get my car. It had been drizzling earlier so my hair was a goner. I
met a really cool girl and her husband down
there and so we kinda hung out. Great
White has been around for awhile and
as we all know has faced some adversity
in the past years. I applaud those guys
for getting back out there and doing
what they do best, entertaining their
fans. The band looks great. Lead singer
Jack Russell surprised me the most with
his shorter hair (yes that was 20 years
ago) but he looked really good. Still thin and lanky, he still knows how to get the
crowd going. Audie Desbrow was rocking on the skins as usual but the one
person I was fixated on was guitarist Michael Lardie. I have always had a secret
crush on him and he looks just the same. When I was watching him play I kept
thinking that he looked a LOT like my friend Lofty! Same build, same height and
same haircut! NOW I know why me and Lofty have become good friends. Not
because he is a sweetheart and helps me out with biz advice etc, but he looks like
MICHAEL LARDIE !!!! I even checked out ML's myspace site and he sounds
Lofty singing too! Thats so freaky. There are a couple of differences tho....
* Hot and Blonde * Hot and tired from unloading Mics
*Guitarist *Bass Player
* LA Rock Star *British Bad Boy
* Likes it short and sweet *Likes em big and sweet
* Played my state *Had his hands across the state lines
* Best Licks in town
Okay looks like we have a winner here. Congrats Lofty! Tho Michael, I will be
available to EVEN the score if you SO wish. And no I haven't had your drummer
in the grey tour bus. I'm clean. DAMN wish I had !
Before I knew it was 10:30 and I had to head back to the bus. I only got to hear 4
songs and since I was so close to the stage I was able to get a peek at their set list,
Now naturally I wanted to hear Once Bitten, since that happens to be the anthem
of my dating life, but it was last on the list. BUMMER. I headed back to the bus
and had to listen to a bus full of drunken screaming women on the ride home.
It was so nice just getting up and going. I tend to be impatient and am so glad I
feel comfortable enough in my own skin to go solo. No hassles on who will drive,
when they want to leave and no babysitting your middle aged friends. Life is
good.
