Behind the door
Back in Black The EIGHTIES ATTACK!
The saying goes that history often
repeats itself and if there is any truth
in the phrase then being an 80's rock
fan , have we got news for you!
The resurgence of mullets and metal
began several years ago when promoters
in Oklahoma arranged a huge outdoor
rock n roll concert party. The talent
consisted of a 80's hair bands we loved
and listened to. Poison, Dokken, Faster
Pussycat, the whole gamut. It was a
great time of music, mayhem and
sexuality all rolled up in one. The hot
LA music scene gave starts to such
legends as Guns N Roses, RATT, Motley
Crue and so many more. Music and
leather, not to mention hair spray and
eyeliner were the tools of the trade.
Rocklahoma offered a fun yearly event
for weekend warriors to escape the
harsh realities of daily life and let their
hair down. The concert package also
featured camping, lots of potential
friendships to be made and plenty of
ballads and guitar riffs.
Rocklahoma had such a huge turn out in
the 3 day event that promoters
everywhere started turning their heads
in amazement. Could this be a resurgence
of the hair bands?
With ticket prices high, poor attendance
at shows and gas prices off the charts
music fests were a win win situation for
bands and their fans. For concert goers
it was a dream come true as one could
catch all their favorite acts on one
stage for a moderate ticket price. The
move was smart, well planned and ... it
worked.
With the overwhelming success of Rocklahoma, corporate sponsors were taking note supplying the
thirsty market with plenty of beer, foods and merchandise. In the beginning of July 2008 San
Antonio concert Promoters Nikita Productions along with sponsors Miller Lite and Javelina Harley
Davidson hosted a South Texas version called the The South Texas rock fest, Complete with camping
the weekend warriors were out in fill force in the little town of Boerne, TX. The blazing Texas
summer heat was no obstacle for party goers when temperature ranged in the high 90's with little
shade to boot. Headlining the event was Queensryche, a San Antonio favorite which features
original master vocalist Geoff Tate . But is this the case for all bands? Not so as several groups
have had multiple lineup changes since the original vinyl release. It's almost inconceivable to think that
every band who existed 25 years ago would have their complete lineup in tow. But does that matter
to concert goers? Obviously not.
Its simple. People are anxious to let loose on the weekends, leave all the issues behind, the mortgage,
kids, work. It's a blast to get back to your roots and see the bands that you fell in love with 20
years ago. Sure the musicians are older and fatter.... But who cares? So are we! Just let loose and
have fun. Life may change but the music never does.
Make sure and mark your calendar for the big event coming to Houston TX August 29- Sept 1 when
rock reunites with an incredible lineup as follows:
Sammy Hagar, Alice Cooper, Bret Michaels, and Queensryche. Also appearing are Bang Tango, Bullet
Boys, Black N Blue, Britny Fox, Dokken, E Nuff Z Nuff, Faster Pussycat, LA Guns. Little Caesar.
Lita Ford, :lynch Mob. Pretty Boy Floyd, RATT. Skid Row, Twisted Sister. Warrant, Yngwie
malmsteen, Y&T, and Austin Texas home boys, Dangerous Toys and Broken Teeth. Not to mention
numerous local unsigned talent!
